Commentluv, Intense Debate, PageRank and Spreading Luv!

Exciting news! Okay, well...er, it's exciting to me. :)

I was doing some research (surprise, surprise - if you visit often, you already know that I'm always "doing research") and I figured out how to implement Commentluv on Mommy Rantings. I had to visit over a dozen different sites to get to the right one with step-by-step instructions that were sooo very simple. If you haven't yet installed Commentluv on your blogger blog, here are the instructions that I used. At first, I didn't think that it worked, because I checked Mommy Rantings and it looked exactly the same - no telltale red heart smiling at me where the comment sections are.

You have to bear in mind that when installed on an already existing blog (versus a brand new blog), Commentluv will not "appear" until the next blog post that you publish.

If you aren't familiar with it, Commentluv is a two-way method of "showing some luv". You leave a (valuable and contributory) comment on a blog with Commentluv (which makes the blog owner very happy - I, personally, like to "hear" what readers have to say about what I wrote, good, bad or ugly) and you, the reader and commentator, receive a link back to your site, with the blog post title in your comment.

If you are a blog owner, installing Commentluv on your blog will encourage readers to leave their comments (and if you love comments like most blog owners do, then you understand the benefit). I also think it enhances my blog when comments are left, as not only are my thoughts, feelings, experience, expressions and opinions posted, but they are expanded on by others who may have different thoughts, feelings, experiences, expressions and opinions. We may know what we are posting about - or we may have done sufficient enough research to post an informative post, but there might be someone else out there that knows just a little bit (or a lot) more - and if they add to the post, it makes it even better, doesn't it?

Leave A Comment - It's Potential Traffic For Your Blog!

So, when people read the blog posts on Mommy Rantings and then read the comments that follow it, if you have a title that catches the reader's eye within your comment, chances are, they will click on it and come visit you! There is a lot of debate and many different individual research projects going on to assess whether or not Commentluv really increases traffic to your blog, but as far as I see it, there's nothing bad about leaving a comment on a great or informative or useful blog post - and if just one person clicks through to your blog because of that comment, well, that's a plus, right?

Your comments on Commentluv blogs are also indexed by Google, which is an additional way to increase traffic, especially if you are skilled at using keywords and leaving content-rich comments. :)

Unfortunately, Commentluv is only going to work on the new posts that are generated from here on out, as the old comment system is still on the older comments. :(

Intense Debate

Originally, Wordpress was the blog to have if you wanted to use Commentluv, but now there is a way to install it on Blogger (see, I have it!). Again, I found these awesome step-by-step instructions here on how to install Commentluv on Blogger - and it's pretty cut-and-dry. Intense Debate is the comment system that you add to your site and then you (with a click of a button) activate the Commentluv plugin at the end.

PageRank

I'm not going to go into a lengthy discussion about what pagerank is, why it's important, bla bla bla. (I'll save that for yet another exciting and informative blog post). I never really paid attention to pagerank, because, to me, it was a bit of a farce. People purchase links and pay other people to write comments around the web to increase their pagerank (basically a bunch of spammers, because they are not "real" comments that contribute to the blog that they are commenting on. They visit the blog, not because they are interested in what is says, but to simply leave their link and then hop onto the next blog) - and to be quite honest with you, that was not/is not/will never be for me!

So, Mommy Rantings sat at a poor little - or big fat - zero for pagerank up until last December, when I last checked. And, sadly, little did I know that it's not like your statchecker, which updates every moment...Google Pagerank only updates on some kind of off-beat quarterly (but not quarterly) basis. Basically, it updates when it updates.

People are actually posting in forums and writing blog posts that "guestimate" when the next PR update will occur. I have a hunch that people are even placing bets on dates when the next pagerank update will occur!  So, I guess we never know until it has happened...and, if you are one to check your stats every 5 minutes, the PR checker will drive you crazy...because you won't see it increase but every few months...if it does at all.

I received an email from someone who mentioned that Mommy Rantings was "so new" and I wondered where in the world she got that from, so I started thinking...That is when I decided to do a quick PR check. If it still was a big fat "0", I could see where she got that from!

And, lo and behold! Here is what I found out:

Okay, not huge to brag about, but I was definitely excited! To go from a nothing to a something (PR2) without even knowing it is awesome! This now has me on a new kick to increase the PR to a 3, of course, because from what I've gathered, you're still a "nothing" unless you have a PR3. And, apparently, there is a PR update coming in July (or August or October...grr! Who knows?)...so there's not much time!

We understand the benefits of Commentluv, but the real hot topic is:

Does Commentluv help to increase your pagerank?

It seems that there are no real answers to this. Everyone has their own data, experiments and conclusions. Some say that adding Commentluv to their blog increased their PR, while others claim that adding Commentluv shares some of your "link juice" with the people who leave comments on your blog, pulling down your pagerank. Then, there is the question of whether or not commenting on Commentluv blogs (which then leaves your links on their blogs, which should increase your pagerank, if they are dofollow links) increases your pagerank or not.

I'm afraid that I don't have the answers for you. :( Everyone seems to think something different...so I'm lost on this one.) Then, it's so hard to judge which aspect really did affect your PR...you may have received more (or lost some) links during the period or you might have changed something else to your blog which affected the PR (especially if you're always diddling with your blog)...so it's not really all that simple to figure out whether Commentluv is what is affecting PR, because the Internet is constantly changing.

Backlinks

What I can say is that Commentluv definitely creates backlinks. And, backlinks are the key to pagerank, so it would make sense that Commentluv would increase the pagerank of your blog or site if you leave comments on blogs with Commentluv installed. (Please don't spam! Really, at least read the blog post and write a contributory comment.)

Bugs!

If there is anything that I hate, it's bugs - real ones and ones that happen on the Internet! Commentluv is no perfect gem, as I've heard that there are several "bugs" to the comment system, including not working with Safari, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome (but, it's supposed to work perfectly with Firefox). And, there have been many, many other complaints, some who have sent a message to Commentluv, only to get very sad (to say the least) responses from. Apparently, not only do they not know how to upgrade/improve their comment system, but they don't really seem to care. If it's working on their end, you will get a response like, "It's working here." LOL

Well, it's here now. Commentluv is on Mommy Rantings and hopefully it works well for everyone!

Do you have Commentluv on your blog? What is your experience with it? Have you experienced any issues? Do you think it provides more value? Have you seen an improvement in pagerank?

Are You Looking For Guest Blog Posts? Also, Giveaway Extended One Day!

HAPPY JULY, Everyone! I hope your summer is full of enjoyment so far!

I recently had an excellent guest blogger write for Mommy Rantings and he was wondering if anyone else out there is interested in some guest blog posts (see Where You Can Find Guest Bloggers below to obtain his email). I love guest blog posts and have recently started to post a whole bunch (in case you didn't notice!).

If you are not familiar with guest blogging or have not taken advantage of it, there are some things about guest blog posts that I want to mention:

1) Guest bloggers can bring new topics and unique content to your already awesome blog that you might not have ever thought about! (Be sure to run it through a duplicate content site like Copyscape or Plagiarism Checker before you post it!)

2) You may not have the time to type up an effectual, well-researched and informative blog post every day. Guest blog posts can help you fill in the gaps. I have also seen people request guest blog posts to schedule in during times when they will be on vacation, moving, etc. It keeps the content rolling and gives visitors something new to read. (and, when you experience that horrendous "writer's block", guest bloggers can help you get through it!)

3) You don't HAVE to accept any old blog post that is offered to you. Simply be polite when you turn the post down, explaining why you cannot accept it. If it only needs a little bit of editing, go ahead and edit it, but if it's a complete mess written with terrible grammar, well...it's your blog.

4) Your guest blogger may want to spread their blog post to their followers, by means of Tweeting and Sharing, thus promoting your blog!

5) Once you post one guest blog post, other guest bloggers will probably contact you with ideas for topics and offers to guest blog.

Where Can You Find Guest Bloggers?

I have been fortunate enough to receive MANY offers from guest bloggers through Blogger Link Up. You can submit offers to write guest blogs AND request guest blog posts...and it works!!! (You can also announce giveaways and contests!)

Contact Sean at sean-p@live.com. He's interested in writing guest blog posts - and he sent me an excellent one! (and he's the reason that I decided to write this post!)

You may already have contacts in your blogging network who would be interested in composing a guest blog post for you - or exchange guest blog posts with you.

Try typing "Request guest blog posts" into Google. I'm sure you will find plenty of other leads.

There Are Downfalls To Guest Blog Posts

I offer a bio and a link within the bio for guest posts. Unfortunately, this means that I need to do my research before I publish the blog post. I want to be careful not to publish a blog post with a bio that includes links that I do not want on Mommy Rantings. And, you will want to keep this in mind, too.

I try to stay away from blog posts that have direct links (because they are basically free advertising for the company) within the blog post. If someone wants to contribute to Mommy Rantings by writing a relevant blog post, that's great! They will get a link within their bio that announces who they are and use that for promotion, but I really am not big on guest blog posts that are written for the purpose of promoting products or services only.

If I've missed anything, please leave a comment!

If you are interested in guest blogging for Mommy Rantings, feel free to contact me!

ALSO...I Have Decided to Extend the Kiki's Fashions Giveaway for 24 hours!

I forgot to send out a reminder!!! So, get those entries in before midnight Eastern, July 1st!!!!

Setting Up Your Feedburner Email Subscriptions

I recently went back into my Feedburner account and configured some things that I simply had NO IDEA needed to be configured in order for people to receive the email subscription! So, there are probably a ton of people who have subscribed and are not receiving it. :(

Sorry! If you have subscribed to the Mommy Rantings newsletter subscription and you have yet to receive your daily dose, be sure to sign up again. I have managed to work out the bugs!

Here's what I found out:

In the Feedburner account, choose the blog that you want the email subscription configured for. Click on the "Publicize" tab. This is where you can choose many of the nifty options for your email newsletters. In the left hand column, click on "Email Subscriptions" - "Subscription Management". This is where you choose the language that your email newsletter is sent in, get the widget for the subscription form, and view the email addresses of the people who have subscribed to your newsletter.

Customize!

Under Email Subscriptions, Communication Preferences, you can customize the subject line of your newsletter and how the confirmation email will appear. Email Branding has yet some more customizations that you can modify. Under Delivery Options, choose the time zone that you reside in and the time you would like your newsletter delivered to your subscribers.

Automatic Tweets

Did you know that Feedburner will automatically tweet your posts? Now, still under the Publicize tab, select Socialize. You can add your Twitter account here and anytime you publish something new on your account, Feedburner sends out a tweet for you, under the account that you specified.

Activate!

My issue was that I did not activate my choices, so people were not receiving the email newsletter. :( So, remember to click "Activate" at the bottom of each page in your Feedburner account.

Analyze

If you are "into" analytics, like me, go to the Analyze tab and you will see how many subscribers you have, which posts they clicked on and how many views and clicks your posts have received in your newsletters.

Troubleshootize

Having trouble? They also have a Troubleshootize tab to help you find solutions to your problems.

There are definitely more options available in the Feedburner account setup, but these were the ones that I found to be the most useful for my needs.

Let me know if this post was helpful and be sure to sign up for the Mommy Rantings newsletter to stay "in-the-know". :)

How to Make a Facebook Welcome Page

Okay, so I am very proud of myself! Blogging is more than just writing in this day and age...it's an art form, it's managing a business...and it's constantly and consistently learning new concepts and applying them. Here is my newest endeavor:

In case you don't have any idea what this is, it's a Facebook Welcome page! Can you see why I'm so stinkin' proud of myself? Okay, for a couple of months now, I have been searching the Internet, trying to figure out this new FBML (Facebook Markup Language), to no avail. I've played around with it and...well, I just don't give up when I get something in my mind!

And those of you who know me also know that if I struggle through something, I will surely turn around and share it with you once I've figured it out! So, how do you make your own Facebook Welcome Page for your blog or company?

It's actually quite simple! (Wish someone had told me! Actually, someone finally did...Business 2 Blogger sent me an email, as I subscribe to them, and the email said to go to Pagemodo...so, there you have it!)

Pagemodo is the Trick! They are Super Cool!

Go to Pagemodo (don't worry, if you're only planning to do one page, it is free!) and sign in with Facebook. Easy enough, right? Give them the permissions that they need to access your info - and don't worry if it brings up your personal Facebook account. You will have a chance to pick which Facebook account to put it on later in the process, as Pagemodo asks you questions for the implementation step.

From here, you choose a template and start working on it! You can change the colors, fonts, add your own pics and wording, and basically customize it to be "your own".

Pagemodo will implement your self-designed Welcome Page for you once you are completely happy with the design...oh! and, if you make any mistakes (like I did) and you don't notice until after your page is up on Facebook, just log back into Pagemodo and "update" your page. Quick and simple.

Wait! You're Not Finished!

So, your Welcome page is up on your blog's Facebook account, but you want your new visitors to land on that page when they first come to it, right? I assume that's the whole point of a Welcome Page.

Okay, click on "edit page" in the top left hand column of the Facebook page, right under your logo (or photo). Then, (and I understand these pages might look or be named differently, as this was difficult to find for me, according to other people's instructions) find "manage permissions".

Here is an image to help you out:

Where it says, "Default Landing Page", select "Welcome". Sorry the image is so blurry! Hopefully you can figure this out. If not, contact me! I'll try to walk you through it, but it's fairly simple. Don't forget to click on "Save Changes" at the bottom of this screen.

That's It!

Now, when new people come to your blog's (or company's) Facebook page, they will immediately be greeted with your self-designed Welcome Page!

After all this time and research, this is all I had to do. !?!?!?! LOL

Let Me Know!!!

Hey, if this blog post helps you, stay tuned for more "blogging" tips!

Also, leave me a comment and follow on GFC, Facebook and Twitter! I would love to hear if my tips work for you!

Transferring to A Domain Name on Blogger

When I go through trial and error, I like to share my learning experiences with everyone so that they do not have to go through the same thing on their own...

So, www.mommyrantings.com is now up and going! That, I am excited about...however, it probably would have been up and running DAYS AGO if I had known that you need to go back into Blogger under Settings and Publishing and actually "activate" or "switch" to publishing under the new domain name. I was getting antsy and losing my patience, so I decided to go into the Blogger settings and start playing around to see if there was something...anything that I missed.  I entered the little bits of info that it requested on that page and...

Viola! The conception of your new domain name!

Spread the word! www.mommyrantings.com is now official, but you can still find Mommy Rantings if you go to the old blogger address, www.imnotnagging.blogspot.com, so don't worry if you happen to forget!

I Think I'm Figuring This Blog Thing Out

You will notice that I figured out how to put the "Tweet"-y thing on my blog, so everyone can Tweet away now. I'm learning these blog gadgets and finding my way through the blog world, with widgets and gadgets and do-dads and thinga-ma-bobs. If you're still figuring out your way around the Blog-O-Sphere and haven't got a clue how to get that Tweet button on your Blogger blog, here is the trick: Tweet Button.

I'm so proud of myself. Yay, me!

Do You Want To Add A Statcounter to Your Blog?

Also, if you are interested in tracking your stats (how many visitors you get, which countries your visitors are coming from), go here.

I am sooooooooo trying to learn as fast as I can, raise 6 kids, do my daily projects and blog for the Mommy Ranters out there that come back faithfully and visit.

Drum Roll For the Shout Outs!

I want to send a shout out to my visitors! Okay, of course, a blog written in the U.S. will have the most visitors based in the U.S. But, I know you are all scattered around the country, so West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, and everyone else in the U.S....thank you for coming here!

To my surprise, I get a lot of hits from India, Belgium, and Hungary! Thank you for visiting!

Denmark, Canada, U.K. and Saudi Arabia...you're the next runners up...Thanks for your loyalty!

Finally, Brazil, Pakistan, Argentina, Greece, Malaysia, New Zealand, Guadalupe, Italy, Ukraine, France and Israel...someone visits Mommy Rantings from each of these countries every day. Thank you so much!

I watch my statcounter religiously...and feel very blessed for every visitor that I get.

Leave Me A Comment...Shout Back

Please leave me a message and let me know where you are visiting from. I am so tickled that you are all so loyal!

Another Shout Out

I want to mention a few blogs that I have found found me and give them a shout out this week for being some cool blogs. (Not to mention these are my recent visitors, so I feel like spreading some love).

Let's start with Coupon Cent Sisters...thank you for all of the cool deals. If the economy stays the same, we're really going to need you!

Help Tawna on her journey to her goal weight. She's got some great ideas for you mommas that want to work off some of that (comes with the territory) mommy weight.

A dear friend from high school (and please don't search for our group Prom pic on my Facebook...), Jenny has some yummilicious recipes on her Never Enough Thyme blog.

Visit MamyBelle and her precious little Baby Belle and ride along their journey of life.

Mormon Surrogate...this woman will sure be blessed in her life. You'll have to visit her to see why.

Pumpkin Butter...you've got to see the eyes on this little girl!

Mom's Me Time is just about to undergo plastic surgery...ummm, I think that came out wrong...the blog is about to get a facelift. Yes, that's what I meant. Stop on by to get a quick peek at the "before". (Can't wait to see the "after"!)

I Need To Back-Track Through My Follower List..and I Will, Mark My Word!

For now, though, I hope you enjoy bopping through the blogs on this list. Pop by and let me know what you think about them!

Don't forget to tell me where (which blog and country) you are visiting from!!! Thanks!
